Italy's leading rock singer, Gianna Nannini, was born in Siena. Often described as the creative rebel in the family, at the age of 19, and after 7 years at the conservatory, she left home to live in Milan, where she performed in many 'off' clubs. Nannini's breakthrough came with the 1979 album California, which effectively announced her transformation into a rock artist.
